2,675 local employees work in our five children's hospitals and the Maternité in Cambodia. In the past year, they have once again made an enormous effort to ensure the medical care of sick and injured children. Their commitment, passion and professionalism are unwavering. We deeply appreciate their tireless efforts and thank them from the bottom of our hearts.

This is our 2024 balance:

– 941,000 children treated as outpatients

– 185,000 children admitted as inpatients

– 31,000 surgical interventions

– 1,029 open heart surgeries or via cardiac catheterisation

– 105,000 outpatient check-ups of pregnant women

– 21,100 babies were born at the Maternité

Denis Laurent is the General Director of our hospitals in Cambodia. We look back on the past year with him - and take a brief look ahead.

Mr Laurent, what was the biggest challenge for you in 2024?

In February, we opened the extension to the Maternité in Siem Reap, with 120 beds and an additional neonatal ward. This means we now have more space for women and their newborns - we can once again provide births and medical care for premature babies and pregnant women under optimum conditions, with the best possible care. This has been a big step for us.

Looking back over the past year, what are you particularly proud of?

We started renovating the intensive care units in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. The wards have now been in operation for 25 and 20 years respectively since opening and need to be refreshed and modernised. We are installing new oxygen lines, creating more space, and are organising ourselves even more efficiently. Furthermore, we installed our new computer tomograph in Phnom Penh in just two and a half months. The new machine means less exposure to radiation for the children, and they don't have to stay still for as long because the image results are available more quickly.

Are there any special projects coming up in 2025?

In Phnom Penh, the renovations in the intensive care unit are continuing, and in Siem Reap we are continuing with the redevelopment of the old hospital pavilions. What’s more, this year we are also opening an oncology ward - just as we set up a new oncology ward in Phnom Penh in autumn 2023.

What is your wish for this year?

That the motivation of all employees remains at such an elevated level. This is the only way we can continue our excellent work to the highest standards. As university hospitals, it is also important for us to train a new generation of doctors and nurses within and outside the Kantha Bopha Hospitals. Only by sharing our vast experience and strengthening our collaboration with other professionals and institutions can we have a positive impact on the health of the people of Cambodia.
