Rachel and Jan will be working there from October. Let them introduce themselves.
Rachel Puthukara, 25, from Adliswil ZH
I have always been fascinated by the health professions and helping others has always been important to me. During my childhood in India, I witnessed the shortage of doctors and the impact it had on the population. This instilled in me a desire to contribute and help people in need. It motivates me to make a positive difference in the lives of others through my work.
I am particularly interested in working in Cambodia because it will give me the opportunity to experience a different healthcare system and a completely different type of medicine. I am sure I will gain valuable experience. I am also interested in learning about the different diseases that are rarely seen in Switzerland and how they are treated there. I am particularly passionate about helping children in difficult circumstances. It is fulfilling to work where the need is greatest and to make an active contribution to improving the lives of local people.
During my two months in Cambodia, I expect to learn a lot about working in a different environment, dealing with different diseases and the resources available. I am also open to new experiences and very grateful for this opportunity. Of course, I am also looking forward to learning about the culture and traditions of the country and making new friends. I am particularly excited about my first experience in paediatrics and am very much looking forward to working with the children.
Jan Reich, 24, from Uerikon ZH
I decided to study medicine because it combines many of my interests. Already back at grammar school, I was particularly interested in natural sciences and wanted to learn more about the human body and how it works. However, the most important motivation is that I want to help people in need and provide them with the best possible care. Direct contact with people fascinates me and also their exciting life stories.
In the future, I can see myself working in paediatrics or paediatric surgery. That's why the offer to spend two months in Cambodia appealed to me immediately. Next year, I will spend two months of my junior assistant doctor’ internship at the Children's Hospital in Zurich. I am really looking forward to comparing the two places.
I hope that I have already gained enough knowledge and experience to be able of real help in Siem Reap. Most of all, I am looking forward to learning about a completely different healthcare system and culture. However, due to the language barrier, communication will certainly be a challenge. And I am curious to see how the team there manages with fewer financial and technical resources.
